Hawks Split with Delaware on Senior Day

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Jay Bant had four RBIs and Wyatt Hunt hit a key three-run home run as the Monmouth University baseball team battled for a doubleheader split with the University of Delaware in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday.
 
Delaware scored in the first and added a handful of runs late for a 5-0 win in game-one. Bant and Hunt combined for seven RBIs as the Hawks battled for a 9-6 victory in game-two. 
 
Game One Recap:
Aiden Stewart's one-out RBI single in the top of the first gave the Blue Hens the 1-0 advantage. 
 
Delaware loaded the bases in the top of the fifth but Tommy Kent was able to get the third out and strand the runners. 
 
A sac fly in the top of the sixth pushed the Delaware lead to 2-0. The Blue Hens added two more runs in the eighth and led 4-0. 
 
Monmouth loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the frame but could not get a run home. 
 
Delaware tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth and claimed the 5-0 victory. 
 
Game Two Recap:
The Hawks struck first in game two as Bant had a two-out two run single in the bottom of the third. 
 
It remained a 2-0 game until the top of the seventh. Delaware pounded out four straight hits to open the frame and added a sac fly. The Blue Hens took a 3-2 lead in the game. 
 
The Hawks answered in their half of the seventh. Casey Caufield's one-out RBI double tied the game at 3-3. After the Blue Hens intentionally walked Chris Walsh, Jay Bant ripped a single to right that brought in two more runs. Walsh later scored on an error by the Blue Hens as Monmouth took a 6-3 lead. 
 
In the eighth, Hunt drilled a ball over the fence in right for a three-run home run and a 9-3 Monmouth lead. 
 
Delaware scored three in the top of the ninth, but Derek Benzinger got the final out to secure the 9-6 Monmouth win.

NOTES 
- The Hawks are now 8-10 all-time against Delaware after splitting the doubleheader on Saturday. 
- With three steals in game two, the Hawks increased their season steals total to 102. Chris Walsh's steal in the seventh inning broke the 2009 team's school record of 100 steals in a single-season. 
- Chris Andrews' eighth inning single in game-one gave him 100 for his career. He's the third Hawk on the roster to reach the milestone (Casey Caufield, Harry Padden, Andrews). 
- Casey Caufield had three base knocks on the day and now needs four more hits to reach 200 for his career. 
- It was Monmouth's sixth doubleheader of the season. It's the first time this season, the Hawks have split a doubleheader. 

NUMBERS CRUNCH
Game One Notes:
- Harry Padden had a three-hit day for the Hawks. It was his 12 multi-hit game of the season. 
- Padden's double gave him 10 for the season. He is the fifth different Hawk to record at least 10 doubles this season. 
- Ryan McLaughlin earned the win for Delaware. He went 3.2 innings and allowed just three hits. 
- Brendan Kenneally took the loss for Hawks as he allowed just one run in four innings of work.
 
Game Two Notes:
- Casey Caufield had a pair of base knocks and now has 20 multi-hit games on the season. 
- Jay Bant had four RBIs in the contest and now has four or more RBIs in a game, four times this season. 
- Wyatt Hunt's home run was his third of the season. He is tied for third on the team for home runs this year. 
- Kevin Opanel tossed six shutout innings before allowing three runs in the top of the seventh.
- Derek Benzinger picked up his second win of the season after going three innings and allowing three runs, one of which was earned. 
- Andrew Callaway took the loss after giving up four runs in one inning of work.

The Hawks and Blue Hens will finish off their series on Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m. That game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia and Flo College.
