Nick Lovarco and
Jay Bant hit key home runs to back a couple of solid pitching performances as the Monmouth University baseball team beat Towson University 5-3 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Saturday afternoon.Â

For the second straight game, the Hawks got on the scoreboard first. After
Harry Padden drew a leadoff walk and stole second,
Casey Caufield roped an RBI single up the middle.
Â
A run in the second and one in the third gave Towson a 2-1 advantage in the contest.
Â
Lovarco drove the second pitch he saw leading off the fourth inning over the fence in left and tied the game at 2-2.Â

After Caufield drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, Bant hit a big home run to right and the Hawks led 4-2.Â
Â
A sac fly from Padden in the top of the sixth pushed the Monmouth advantage to 5-2.Â

Towson got a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth and pulled to within two, 5-3.Â

The Hawks pitching staff locked down after that as
Derek Benzinger retired the final seven batters he saw to secure the 5-3 win.
NOTESÂ
- It was the tenth meeting all-time between the Hawks and Tigers. Monmouth leads the series 6-4, having won six of the last seven meetings.
