Hawks Drop Series Opener at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Monmouth University Softball Team outhit the Elon Phoenix but fell 7-2 on Saturday evening at Hunt Softball Park.
 
The Hawks collected nine hits, with Liv Smith, Gabby Gesualdo, and Jayla Cadena leading the charge with two each. Smith went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Gesualdo doubled and scored, and Cadena added a pair of hits, including a double.
 
After three scoreless innings, Elon struck first in the fourth, plating three runs before adding four more in the fifth to take control. Sandwiched in between was a two-run fifth by Monmouth, where Giana Scotti scored on a wild pitch and Gesualdo scored on a Cadena sacrifice fly.
 
Cadena started in the circle and battled through 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and striking out two. Izzy Bonacci came in for the final two outs, holding the Phoenix scoreless in relief.

- Cadena is on a season-high nine-game hitting streak and leads the Hawks with a .333 batting average.
