Monmouth Battles Back for DH Sweep at Georgetown

TYSONS CORNER, VA. – The Monmouth University baseball team used a pair of late comebacks to secure a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks swept the weekend series to extend their current win streak to five straight games.
 
In game one the Hawks trailed 9-1 after four innings but scored 16 unanswered runs for a 17-9 victory. Nick Lovarco had four RBIs to lead the Monmouth comeback in that game. In game two, the Hawks trailed 8-5 going to the top of the ninth but scored six times to claim an 11-8 win. Chris Andrews was 2-for-2 in the game and scored the go-ahead run. 

Game One Recap: It was all Georgetown early in game one. The Hoyas used a seven-run fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead in the game.
 
The Hawks began their comeback with two runs in the fifth. Lovarco's first home run as a Hawk in the sixth, pulled the visitors to within three, 9-6. 
 
In the seventh inning, the Hawks sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs to take a 13-9 lead. Highlights from the inning included Lovarco's RBI double and a two-run single from Shane Dux.
 
Monmouth put four more runs on the board in the top of the ninth. Dux had a sac fly while Jay Bant plated two runs on a single.
 
A scoreless ninth from JD Greeley closed out the 17-9 win.
 
Game Two Recap: Game two was a back-and-forth affair that found the Hawks and Hoyas tied at 5-5 after four innings of play. 
 
Georgetown scored one in the fifth and two in the seventh and grabbed an 8-5 lead.
 
The Hoyas carried that lead into the top of the ninth when the Hawks got the offense going. The first six batters in the frame reached safely. When Wyatt Hunt reached on an error, the tying and go-ahead runs scored. Harry Padden's double scored two more runs and gave the Hawks some insurance at 11-8.
 
Nick Tamburro pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win.

NOTES
- Monmouth moves to 4-0 all-time against Georgetown.
- The Hawks have their first five game win streak of the season and their first five game win streak since the end of April last year.
- Casey Caufield had two hits in each game and extended his current hit streak to 15 straight games.
- Harry Padden had a hit in each game and has now reached base safely in all 18 games this season.
- The Hawks had double digit hits in each game and move to 7-1 on the year when they record 10 or more hits in a game. 

NUMBERS CRUNCH
Game One Numbers
- Nick Lovarco had a team-high four hits in game one, three of which went for extra bases (two doubles, one home run).
- The Hawks matched their season-high with seven stolen bases in the contest. Harry Padden and Casey Caufield led the efforts with two swipes each. 
- Ryan Mealy picked up his first career win with four scoreless innings of relief work. Mealy struck out a season-best five batters in the outing.
- Nadell Booker took the loss for Georgetown after giving up four runs in 0.1 innings.  
 
Game Two Numbers
- Harry Padden, Casey Caufield and Chris Andrews all had two hits in the contest. It was Padden's seventh multi-hit game of the season. It was Caufield's 10th multi-hit game and Andrews' fourth.
- Chris Andrews finished with a career-high four steals in the game. It was the most steals by a CAA player this season. 
- Wyatt Hunt matched his season-high with three runs scored in the game.
- Nick Tamburro got the win with two innings of one-hit relief work. 
- Marshall Whitmer took the loss for Georgetown as he gave up one run in one inning of work.

Monmouth plays its final game of its season-opening 20 game road trip on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at Rider. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
