Monmouth Falls at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Rider University battled for a 5-2 win over the Monmouth University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
The Broncs got the scoring started with a solo home run from Charlie Magoulick in the third. 
 
Rider added two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage. 
 
The Hawks broke through for a run in the sixth. Shane Dux was hit by a pitch leading off and came around to score on Harry Padden's fielders choice. 
 
Monmouth added a run in the top of the ninth. Simmi Whitehill drew a walk as a pinch-hitter. He took second on a wild pitch and scored on Nick Lovarco's single to right. 
 
That made the final score, 5-2 in favor of the home team.

NOTES 
- Monmouth and Rider were meeting for the 71st time but the first time since 2002. Rider has won two straight games and leads the series 37-34.
- The Hawks move to 2-1 this season against opponents from the state of New Jersey.
- Harry Padden's steal was his 10th of the season and 39th of his career. That moved him into a tie for 12th with Kyle Higgins (2005-08) on the career steals list at Monmouth.
- Casey Caufield's walk in the sixth extended his reached base streak to 16 straight games.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Jacob Ciccone made his longest outing as a Hawk. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. 
- Chris Andrews extended his hit streak to five straight games with a single. 
- Harry Padden and Andrews each had a steal in the game. That gives the Hawks three players with 10 steals this season (Casey Caufield, Harry Padden, Chris Andrews).
- Kyle Batt earned the win for Rider after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just one run.
- Joey Ciancimino took the loss for the Hawks after giving up five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

NEXT UP
Monmouth finally plays a home game when it begins Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday, Mar. 21. The Hawks will play host Hofstra with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
