CARY, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh scored five runs in the first three innings and captured a 5-1 victory over the Monmouth University baseball team on Saturday morning at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The Panthers took the early advantage with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jayden Melendez had an RBI single to score one while a Hawks' error allowed the second run to score.

Pitt scored three runs in the bottom of the third and extended its lead to 5-0. Melendez had an RBI double in the inning and came around to score on Gavin Miller's groundout.Â

Ryan Mealy entered the game in the fifth and limited the Pitt opportunities from that point. The freshman retired the first five batters he saw and seven of the first eight.Â

The Hawks broke through in the eighth.
Chris Walsh reached on an infield single and stole second. An error on the play allowed the Monmouth designated hitter to reach third.
Casey Caufield followed with a walk and stole second, on the play Walsh scored.

Pitt claimed the 5-1 win.
NOTES
-Â Pitt captured its third win in the all-time series between the two schools. Two of the three wins have come this weekend.

Kenny Noe made his collegiate debut in the bottom of the eighth. Â

Chris Walsh had two hits in the contest. It was his third multi-hit game of the season.
- Walsh had a pair of stolen bases while
Casey Caufield also had a steal. The duo leads the Hawks with three stolen bases on the season.

Ryan Mealy threw a season-high four innings in relief. Â
- Mealy has a pair of strikeouts in each of his appearances for the Hawks this season.
- Ryan Reed earned the win for Pitt as he went seven innings and allowed just four hits.

Tommy Kent took the loss for the Hawks after giving up five runs on five hits in four innings.
