LAS VEGAS – The Monmouth University Softball Team made an appearance on the west coast during opening day of the Rebel Classic Friday but fell in two matchups against Idaho State and host UNLV on Friday.
Â
The Hawks (0-7) put runners on base throughout the day, led by senior
Lexi Castaneda, who went 2-for-3 with a stolen base across both contests. Junior
Savannah Simons continued her strong start to the season, tallying two hits against UNLV, while
Mackenzie Bloss added a hit in each game.
Â
In the opening contest against Idaho State, Monmouth's offense broke through in the fifth inning when freshman
Kylee McLain lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Castaneda, who had reached on a single. The Hawks' pitching duo of
Olivia Lewis and
Izzy Bonacci worked to slow down the Bengals' attack after a seven-run second inning but ultimately fell 10-1.
Â
Later in the day, Monmouth squared off against UNLV and received a solid outing from
Jayla Cadena, who went five innings while working around 10 hits and eight walks. The Hawks' defense turned a key double play in the early innings to keep the game close. Simons led the way offensively with two hits, while Bloss and Castaneda each contributed a hit. Monmouth had runners on in multiple innings but couldn't capitalize, as UNLV secured an 8-0 win.
Â
Monmouth will return to action on Saturday for a rematch with Idaho State the Rebel Classic, looking to build on its offensive progress and break into the win column.
