PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In a chippy contest that featured a combined 62 fouls and 80 free throws, the Monmouth women's basketball team fell 71-66 to UMES on Tuesday night at the Hytche Athletic Center.

Alexis Davis led the Hawks offensively with 18 points and 11 rebounds, recording her second career double-double.
It was a tightly contested game that came down to the final minutes, but UMES led for 39 of the 40 minutes. Brianna Barnes opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the game, and the Hawks never relinquished the lead.
UMES jumped out to an 11-3 start by the first media timeout and carried that momentum to a 20-11 advantage after the first quarter. The Hawks extended their lead to 19 points with 4:18 left in the first half—their largest of the night—but Monmouth responded with a 9-3 run to trim the halftime deficit to 36-25.
After managing just five field goals in the first half, Monmouth found its rhythm offensively after the break, shooting 50% in both the third and fourth quarters. UMES opened the third with a three-pointer, but Monmouth began to chip away, cutting the lead to five on an
Ella Farrelly layup with 2:45 remaining in the quarter.
Madalena Amaro beat the buzzer with a half-court heave to pull Monmouth within six entering the final frame. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets. Davis hit a free throw with 1:33 to play to bring Monmouth within four—the smallest margin since the first half—but UMES closed the game on a 3-2 run to secure the win.
