WEST LONG BRANCH – Chloe Messer's goal with just over two minutes to play helped the Monmouth women's soccer team erase a 1-0 halftime lead to defeat Hofstra, 2-1, on Sunday at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.
Hofstra scored early, but a second-half equalizer from
Emily De Almeida set up Messer's late-game heroics, giving the Hawks their third consecutive CAA win.
It took the Pride less than 10 minutes to break through, scoring on a header in the seventh minute off a pretty cross from near midfield.
The Hawks responded with nine first-half shots, three on target, controlling possession for the remainder of the half, but three saves from Lilly Bailey kept Hofstra in front at the end of the first half.
Lindsey Husic opened the second half with the 10
th shot of the game for the Hawks, and in the 54
th minute, she set up
Brooke De Almeida to get a shot off that beat Bailey but rang loud off the crossbar.
Miller made her first stop of the second half and third of the game in the 63
rd minute, as the Monmouth defense continued to limit Hofstra's scoring opportunities following the early goal.
The constant pressure from the Hawks finally paid off in the 66
th minute.
Summer Reimet's shot on the goal line was denied by Baily, but
Emily De Almeida was right there to finish the deflection, bringing the game level with just over half an hour to play. Reiemt was credited with the assist on the equalizer.
The Hawks continued to press offensively, leading to an 88th-minute corner kick. After the ball bounced around in the box, ricocheting off four different players, it eventually bounced to Messer at the top of the box. The junior hit a one-touch volley that sailed into the back of the net, giving Monmouth the lead with 2:04 to play.
Head Coach Kylee Flynn Postgame:
"They showed a lot of heart. We have been in that position before, being down one. It took us about 15 minutes to figure out our pace, rhythm and tempo. Credit to Hofstra, they are always tough on us in that regard. But we came back and we battled and kept it cool. We finished when it was important at the end."
