WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – No. 13 Monmouth field hockey opened CAA play with a dominant 4-0 victory Friday afternoon at So Sweet a Cat Field, earning their first shutout of the season.
The Hawks struck early—just 49 seconds into the game—as
Anna Moors converted on a penalty corner with assists from
Hannah Tromble and
Eulalie Brouwers. Monmouth took control from that point forward.
Despite the early goal, Hofstra's defense held Monmouth scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter.
Freshman
Maia McCourt doubled the Hawks' lead in the 19th minute, again on a penalty corner, with assists from Brouwers and
Florence van Doorn. van Doorn. Brouwers finished the game with two assists, playing a key role in the win.
Monmouth carried a 2-0 lead into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, sophomore
Milla Frye reignited the Hawks' momentum, driving down the left side of the field, faking out a defender, and scoring with precision.
Van Doorn sealed the victory with Monmouth's fourth and final goal, scoring with just 47 seconds left. After
Keely Bowers' initial shot was blocked, she collected the rebound and set up van Doorn for the finish.
