NEWARK, Del. – The Monmouth University baseball team staged a pair of late inning rallies to sweep a doubleheader from the University of Delaware in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday. The Hawks stretched their current win streak to five straight games with the sweep.

The Hawks scored seven runs in the final four innings of game one to claim a 9-7 victory. Monmouth tallied two runs in the top of the ninth and battled for a 2-1 win in game two.

Game One Recap: Delaware struck first in game one as the Blue Hens plated three in the first and one in the third for a 4-0 advantage.

Monmouth began its comeback trek in the fourth as Chris Walsh had a two-out two-run single to right that made it a 4-2 game. The Hawks tied things up in the sixth as Wyatt Hunt delivered a two run double with two outs.

Delaware answered with two in the bottom of the sixth and took a 6-4 advantage. Monmouth put two on the board in the top of the seventh and retied the game at 6-6.

The Hawks took their first lead of the game in the eighth as Walsh scored on an RBI single from Hunt and Hunt eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Delaware got one back in the bottom of the eighth and made it an 8-7 game, but the Hawks added an insurance run in the ninth for a 9-7 victory.

Game Two Recap: Game two was dominated by performances from the pitching staffs. Alec Couture was solid for the Hawks allowing just one third inning run and going seven strong. However, the combination of Ethan Shaub and Anthony Gubitosi were up to the challenge, keeping the Hawks off the board until the top of the ninth.

In the top of the ninth, the Hawks got their first two runners on before Chris Walsh delivered a single to right that scored the game-tying run. Chris Andrews was running hard on the play and advanced to third. That allowed him to score as the Blue Hens turned a double play on the next batter.

Colin Ruddy allowed one runner to reach in the bottom of the ninth but was able to get three outs to preserve the 2-1 win.

NOTES & QUOTES
"This was two very good team wins tonight. The guys showed great resolve and battled back in both games. The entire team played together competed for 18 innings.

In Game 1: After falling behind early, we stayed positive and kept playing which allowed us to fight back into the game. Drew Helmstetter gave up a few early runs and then was able to battle and compete giving us a chance to stay in the game. Tommy Kent and Derek Benzinger came in and provided quality relief to close it out. Offensively, we kept creating opportunities and the bats came to life in the middle of the game.

In Game 2: Alec Couture was outstanding once again. He competed and made pitches all night. Colin Ruddy came in and gave us a chance going into the ninth down a run. Phil Stahl got us started, Chris Walsh had the big hit and Wyatt Hunt just put the ball in play in a big spot that enabled us to get the second run."
