Hawks Finish Third and Eighth at CAA Outdoor T&F Championships

May 11, 2024

ELON, N.C. – The Monmouth University Track and Field Teams completed the 2024 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Complex on the campus of Elon University.

The Hawks medaled in six more events to bring their overall total to ten for the weekend, as the men's team finished in third place with 127.5 total points while the women placed eighth with 53.5.

Veronica Chainov and Jan Volkmar led the way for Monmouth with gold medals in the women's high jump and decathlon, respectively. After winning gold at the Indoor Championships in February, Chainov earned a sweep of the CAA this season with a clearance of 1.80m. Volkmar not only won gold but broke the Monmouth program record with 6,947 points in the decathlon. David Strong also impressed in the 10-part event, as he won silver after putting up 6,706 total points – a new PR.

Yasmeen Tinsley shined again and leaves Elon with two silver medals. Her school record-breaking time of 13.59 placed second in the women's 100m hurdles, marking back-to-back days the junior set a PR. She also finished runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a time of 47.91, which is .01 seconds off of her program record.

The final medal of the weekend went to the men's 4x100m relay squad. Aiden Baldelli, Ahmad Brock, James Burrus Jr., and Alexander Kislenko combined for a time of 40.98 to win bronze. The time also ranks tied for fourth in program history.

More Hawks recorded marks worthy of a spot on the Top Tens list. Jordan Ricketts (400m hurdles, 52.44, sixth), Ian Moore (800m, 1:50.52, sixth), and Nico Grilli (1500m, 3:52.97, tied-tenth) made moves up the MU leaderboards in men's track events. Volkmar also put up a new personal best mark in the pole vault during the decathlon. He cleared the bar at 4.80m to rank tied for third, while Natalie Rolon-Issa recorded the third-furthest women's discus throw at 41.18m.

Two women's relay squads etched their names into the MU history books. Kat Gilbert, Rett Schnoor, Tinsley, and Brianna Rubio ran the second-fastest 4x100m time at 46.23 seconds, while Rubio, Hannah Birdsall, Tinsley, and Madison Latimer combined for a time of 3:46.54 in the 4x400m relay for tenth-best all-time.

Four out of five Hawks set PRs in the heptathlon, with Annie Rutledge finishing in fourth place overall with 4,422 points. Flavia Daniels (4,205, fifth), Abby Boggs (4,005, tied-sixth), Hailey Guerrieri (4,005, tied-sixth), and Emma McKee (3,443, tenth) each made appearances in MU's record book.

QUOTE
"What a weekend of track and field for the Hawks! I was very happy with the way we competed the last two days. Our student-athletes stepped up in a big way when the pressure was on. The CAA has become an extremely competitive track and field conference with some of the best individuals in the NCAA.

We had so many outstanding performances, it's hard to know where to begin. I want to thank our assistant coaches and support staff who do such a great job preparing our student-athletes. Next stop, Lexington, KY, for the NCAA East Regional. Fly Hawks!" – Head Coach Mike Nelson
