Total Team Effort Leads Monmouth Over Princeton

FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 10 (9-17)
Princeton 3 (9-17)

PRINCETON, N.J. – A home run saving catch in the first inning and seven-run offensive outburst in the third inning highlighted a 10-3 win for the Monmouth University baseball team over Princeton University on Tuesday afternoon.

In the bottom of the first, Princeton got a runner on second with two outs. The next batter drove one deep into center field but Trey Porter, who was making his first career start, went up and over the wall to bring the ball back and keep things scoreless.

Princeton struck first on the scoreboard with a two-out run in the bottom of the second.

Monmouth responded in a big way in the top of the third as the Hawks sent 12 batters to plate and scored seven runs. The Hawks got things started with a one-out three-run home run to left field off the bat of Chris Andrews. Porter and Brendan Buecker each had the first hit of their careers and knocked in a run in the frame while Phil Stahl plated two with his base knock.

The Hawks added to their lead in the fourth as Austin Denlinger's RBI triple scored Andrews.

Denlinger's second triple of the day, in the sixth inning, scored Casey Caufield and made it a 9-1 game.

Princeton got one run back in the bottom of the seventh and the two sides traded runs in the ninth, which made the final score 10-3.

NOTES & QUOTES
"We finally got some baseball weather and got a lot of contributions across the board. Nick Tamburro gave us a great start and then Nick Hios and Jacob Ciccone were able to finish. It was very encouraging to see Nick H. and Jacob get out there and compete; they have been working hard for their opportunity.

Trey Porter made an incredible play in the first inning, and it gave us a little spark; then we were able to follow it up with the big inning early. Our lineup was able to string a bunch of good AB's together and it enabled us to relax some.  Chris Andrews has been playing well of late and his big hit early got us going.  We had a very balanced attack: Casey Caufield had a great day and Austin Denlinger provided some much-needed RBI's. Defensively we made the plays.

Everyone was happy for the young guys who collectively got a chance to contribute today. The freshman performed admirably; Trey Porter and Brendan Buecker got their first career hits. We look forward to getting back at it this weekend." - The Hawks move to 23-19 all-time against Princeton and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Tigers.
- Casey Caufield finished with a career-high five hits in the game. He is the first Hawk since Jalen Jenkins in 2021 to have five hits in a game.
- Chris Andrews connected on his first career home run in the third inning.
- Andrew has hit safely in four straight games for the Hawks.
- Austin Denlinger had a pair of triples in the game. He is the first Hawk to have two triples in a game since teammate Harry Padden did so in 2021.
- Freshmen Trey Porter and Brendan Buecker each registered their first collegiate hits in the third inning.
- Phil Stahl extended his hit streak to five straight games.
