Monmouth Falls to William & Mary in Series Finale

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – William & Mary jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a late charge for a 9-5 win over the Monmouth University baseball team in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday. 
 
Home runs from Anthony Greco and Trey Christman helped William & Mary build a 4-0 lead after two innings of action. 
 
The Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the second. Chris Andrews reached on a base hit and came around to score on Eric Sabato's base knock to right field. 
 
Monmouth made it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the fifth. Brendan Buecker reached on a one-out walk and scored on Austin Denlinger's sac fly to left field. 
 
William & Mary scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and made it a 6-2 game. 
 
Monmouth cut into the Tribe advantage in the bottom of the seventh. James Harmstead reached via a two-out error and Joey Ventresca scored on the play. Phil Stahl followed with a single that allowed Casey Caufield to cross the dish and made it a 6-4 game. 
 
William & Mary scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth to extend its lead to 9-4. 
 
The Hawks had one last chance in the ninth as Harmstead's double scored Denlinger but the Tribe was able to get the final out to secure the 9-5 win. 

NOTES
- William & Mary won the season series, 2-1 and now leads the all-time series 5-2. 
- Chris Andrews extended his hit streak to three straight games.
- Phil Stahl's seventh inning single pushed his hit streak to four straight games and extended his on base streak to nine straight games.
- James Harmstead's double was his seventh of the season and 33rd of his career. Harmstead needs one more double to move into the top 20 for career doubles at Monmouth. 
- Casey Caufield had his ninth multi-hit game of the season after finishing with three base knocks. 
- Brendan Buecker scored his first career run after reaching on a walk in the fifth.   

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- William & Mary had a 10-9 edge in hits in the game. 
- It was the ninth time this season the Hawks have recorded two or more doubles in a game.   
- Reed Interdonato earned the win in relief for William & Mary. He went three innings out of the pen and surrendered one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
- Kevin Opanel took the loss for the Hawks as he started and went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts. 
- Jake Fraher tossed two solid relief innings and gave up one run on two hits.
