WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University Softball Team fell twice to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday at MU Softball Park.
Stony Brook was able to escape with a nail-biting 4-3 win in game one, as Monmouth left the tying run on base. After falling behind early, the Hawks evened the score at two on the backs of RBIs from
Savannah Simons (3-4, R, 2 RBI) and
Ana Rodriguez in the bottom of the first inning. Stony Brook responded with another two-run inning in the third, and Monmouth would push another across on a second Simons RBI knock in the fourth, but there would be no more scoring through the final pitch.
Starting pitcher
Billie Kerwood struck out seven Seawolves, becoming the fifth Hawk to reach the 400-career strikeout mark in the process. The junior gave up four runs on nine hits in the complete game loss.
The Seawolves used a five-run second inning in game two to jump out to an early lead. Monmouth managed just three hits to Stony Brook's 12 as SBU tacked on another three runs in the fourth inning. Monmouth would make hard contact, but the Blue & White could not seem to hit it where Seawolves were not, as Stony Brook cruise to the five-inning victory. The Hawks fall to eighth place in the CAA standings, while the Seawolves find themselves in a tie for fifth.
