Monmouth Falls to Stony Brook in Series Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Phil Stahl had a home run to give the Monmouth University baseball team an early advantage, but Stony Brook scored the final nine runs in the game to secure a 9-1 victory in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday.
 
Stahl put the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the second. After a Stony Brook pitching change, the graduate student drove the first pitch he saw over the fence in center field for the 1-0 advantage. 
 
Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a sac fly from Cam Santerre and an RBI double from Matty Wright. 
 
The Seawolves extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the seventh. Stony Brook scored four runs on five hits, including a home run from Evan Fox.
 
Stony Brook tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth, which made the final score 9-1.

NOTES
- Stony Brook moves to 6-1 all-time against the Hawks with the win.  
- Phil Stahl's home run was his third of the season and 13th of his career.
- Casey Caufield extended his hit streak to three straight games.
- Harry Padden pushed his hit streak to five straight games. 
- Eric Sabato has reached base safely in four straight games.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Stony Brook out hit the Hawks, 14-5 in the game. 
- Colin Rhein earned the win in relief for Stony Brook. He went 6.2 innings and gave up one run on five hits while striking out eight. 
- Drew Helmstetter took the loss for the Hawks as he surrendered five runs in 6.1 innings of action.
