Monmouth Falls to Delaware on Walkoff

FINAL SCORE
Monmouth (14-27, 6-11 CAA) – 3
Delaware (31-8, 16-2 CAA) – 4

NEWARK, Del. – The Monmouth University Softball Team were swept by the Delaware Blue Hens following a 4-3 walk-off loss on Sunday.

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Dani Dabroski scored with two outs on a fielding error by the UDel second baseman. Dabroski hit an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a Savannah Simons fly out to center prior to coming across to score.

Delaware would tie things up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but starting pitcher Ana Rodriguez was able to limit the damage to just a single run. Rodriguez would take a two-run lead into the sixth after Monmouth scored two runs on a wild throw to third base on a successful double steal. Dabroski came into score easily after swiping third, and Simons was able to score all the way from first once the ball got passed not only the third baseman, but left fielder, as well.

The Blue Hens would chip away to tie it in the sixth inning. Rodriguez was lifted from the circle for Billie Kerwood with the bases loaded and one out after going 5.1 innings and striking out and walking a pair of Delaware hitters. Delaware's second run of the contest came on a Kerwood wild pitch, and the game was tied on a RBI groundout to Bri Lawson at second.

After going 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, Monmouth fell in the bottom half of the frame as a walk-off single gave the Blue Hens their seventh straight win.

QUOTE
"I thought we played tough today. Ana pitched awesome, and the offense was great putting up eight hits and three runs against a top pitcher. The difference in the game came down to routine plays. While the result was disappointing, we can build off today for our final three series." – Head Coach Shannon Salsburg
