Monmouth Falls in Extra Inning Heartbreaker to Cougars

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to secure a 6-5 win over the Monmouth University baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play. 
 
The Hawks got on the board in the first as Austin Denlinger's RBI double scored Harry Padden. 
 
Phil Stahl's home run to right field in the top of the fourth extended the Monmouth advantage to 2-0. 
 
College of Charleston tied things up with a pair of runs in the bottom half of that frame. 
 
The Hawks went back on top in the sixth as a Chris Andrews delivered a two-out single that scored James Harmstead. 
 
An RBI bunt single in the bottom of the seventh, allowed the Cougars to tie the game at 3-3. 
 
Monmouth loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but was unable to push a run across. 
 
The game headed to extra innings all knotted at 3-3. 
 
In the top of the 10th, it was once again Andrews coming through with a two-out single that scored Padden and gave Monmouth a 4-3 advantage. Joey DeMucci followed with an RBI single of his own and pushed the Hawks' lead to 5-3.
 
College of Charleston took advantage of three Monmouth errors in the bottom of the 10th to secure the 6-5 walkoff win.

NOTES
- College of Charleston moves to 5-0 all-time against the Hawks.  
- Chris Andrews extended his hit streak to six straight games with two base knocks.
- Phil Stahl extended his on-base streak to 12 straight games after a two-hit day.
- Casey Caufield pushed his hit streak to five straight games. 
- Austin Denlinger's first inning double was his team-leading 12 of the season. 
- Monmouth falls to 1-3 in extra inning contests this season.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Monmouth out hit College of Charleston, 13-8.  
- The Cougars held a 4-3 edge in extra base hits in the contest.   
- Andrew Duval earned the win for the Cougars as he got the final out in the top of the 10th. 
- Derek Benzinger suffered the tough luck loss for the Hawks as he threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up three runs, none of which were earned.
- Alec Couture went the first seven innings for the Hawks and struck out at least eight batters for the second straight start.
