BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Monmouth University Softball Team had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning, but the Campbell Fighting Camels were able to hold on after allowing five of the game's final six runs to win game one of a weekend CAA series, 8-5, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Friday.
Campbell used a three-run third inning and four-run fifth to take a 7-0 lead into the final two frames.
Mackenzie Bloss, Monmouth's team leader in RBIs, drove in
Dani Dabroski for her 22
nd RBI of 2024 with a groundout to second base. Campbell responded with a run in their half of the sixth to go back up by seven, 8-1.
In the seventh, six straight Hawks reached base while down to their final out, scoring four runs in the process.
Lexi Castaneda doubled in
Bri Lawson for the first run of the inning, and after Dabroski drew her 19
th walk of the season,
Savannah Simons cleared the bases on an error by Campbell's first baseman.
Mackenzie Bloss walked immediately after, bringing up
Abby Warner with a chance to tie the game on one swing. The Camels re-entered their starting pitcher and were able to shut the door to take the first game of the series.
Monmouth starter
Billie Kerwood pitched 4.1 innings and struck out five but was credited with her second loss in CAA play this season.
