Saint Joseph's Scores Two in the Ninth To Defeat Monmouth

MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joseph's University scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 7-6 win over the Monmouth University baseball team on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Saint Joseph's used a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to take the early advantage in the game. 
 
Monmouth answered back in the top of the third. Austin Denlinger had an RBI single before Eric Sabato roped a two-run double to left which gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage. 
 
Saint Joseph's scored a single run in the bottom of the third to tie it before Monmouth went back on top 4-3 with a run in the fourth. The home team once again answered in the bottom half of the frame and the two sides were tied at 4-4.
 
Monmouth took a 6-4 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Denlinger drew a two-out bases loaded walk to plate the first run. Sabato had an RBI groundout to score the second run. 
 
Saint Joseph's pulled to within one, 6-5 on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Monmouth got one out before Saint Joseph's loaded the bases. A sac fly tied the game at 6-6 before the home team got a two-out single to left that scored the game-winning run.

NOTES
- Saint Joseph's recorded its second straight victory over Monmouth and now leads the all-time series, 8-6.
- Austin Denlinger finished with two hits in the game. He has seven games with multiple hits and has hit safely in nine straight contests.  
- Eric Sabato had a career-high three RBIs for Monmouth. 
- Sabato has hit safely in seven straight games and has multiple hits in six of those contests. 
- Phil Stahl extended his hit streak to seven straight games and has multiple hits in each of the last four contests.
- Kevin Opanel had a season-high seven strikeouts for Monmouth. 

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Saint Joseph's held a 12-9 edge in hits in the game. 
- Monmouth had a player reach base after being hit by a pitch four times in the game, including twice for Casey Caufield
- Matt McShane earned the win in relief for Saint Joseph's. He went 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit. 
- Derek Benzinger took the loss for Monmouth as he gave up two runs in 1.1 innings.
