Padden Leads Monmouth in Loss to Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – After the Monmouth University baseball team scored two in the top of the ninth to take the lead, Seton Hall University scored two in the bottom half of the frame and claimed a 6-5 win on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Hawks struck first in this one putting three on the board in the top of the fourth. After the first two batters reached via a single and a walk, Seton Hall got the first out on a fielder choice. Monmouth's next batter, Harry Padden drilled the fourth pitch he saw over the left field fence for a three-run homer. 
 
Seton Hall looked to be on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a sac fly to the outfield but a smart tag by Mason Wolf led to a double play at the plate and no run scoring. 
 
The Hawks got the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth before the Pirates plated three runs to tie the game. Staus Pokrovsky had a two-run single in the frame to highlight the action. 
 
Seton Hall got a two-out run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-3 advantage. 
 
Monmouth rallied in its final at-bats of the game to take a 5-4 advantage. Padden scored the tying run with two outs on a throwing error by the pitcher. Casey Caufield then reached on an error which allowed Skyler Saunders to score the go-ahead run. 
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Seton Hall put two runners on before an error by the Hawks allowed the tying run to score. Monmouth got the first out of the inning before Zack Sylvester lifted a sac fly to right to score the game-winning run. 

NOTES
- Seton Hall now leads the all-time series with the Hawks, 15-7-1.
- Harry Padden's home run was his third of the season. Padden, who was back in starting lineup for the first time since March 8, is now tied for the team lead for home runs.  
- Padden has hit in seven straight games for the Hawks. 
- Sabato has hit safely in eight straight games for the Hawks. 
- Mason Wolf has hit safely in four straight for Monmouth.
- Nick Tamburro matched his season-high with three strikeouts.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Seton Hall outhit Monmouth 9-4 in the game. 
- Monmouth had a season-best three stolen bases in the game. Casey Caufield, Eric Sabato and Harry Padden all registered a steal. 
- Michael Gillen earned the win for Seton Hall as he went an inning in relief and gave up two unearned runs. 
- Caden Carlin took the loss for Monmouth as he surrendered two unearned runs in an inning plus of work. 
 
NEXT UP
Monmouth will be back in action when it opens Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play by hosting Towson in a three-game set. That series will be played in Lakewood, New Jersey at the BlueClaws facility.
