Saint Joseph's Uses Big Sixth Inning to Defeat Monmouth

MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joseph's scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and defeated the Monmouth University baseball team 10-6 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Saint Joseph's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as each of the first three batters in the bottom of the first reached base. 
 
Monmouth got on the board in the top of the second thanks to a Matt Scrivanic two-out RBI double.
 
Monmouth tied the game up in the top of the third as Eric Sabato launched his first home run of the year to left field. 
 
Saint Joseph's went back on top, 4-2 with runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. 
 
Monmouth pulled to within one on a James Harmstead home run in the top of the fifth. The visitors pulled even in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Chris Walsh. 
 
Saint Joseph's put five on the board in the bottom of the sixth and took a 9-4 advantage. The big hit in the inning came from Owen Petrich, who had a three run home run. 
 
Monmouth got one run back in the top of the seventh as Phil Stahl had an RBI single. However, Saint Joseph's made it a 10-5 game with a run in the bottom of that frame. 
 
Stahl plated another run with an RBI single in the top of the ninth but that was all Monmouth could push across as Saint Joseph's claimed the 10-6 win.

- Saint Joseph's snapped Monmouth's two-game win streak with the victory.
- Chris Walsh recorded his first career RBI while making the first start of his career in right field. 
- Eric Sabato has hit safely in six straight games and has multiple hits in five of those contests. 
- Austin Denlinger has hit safely in eight straight games for Monmouth.
- James Harmstead has hit safely in six straight games and has multiple hits in four of those games. 
- Phil Stahl extended his hit streak to six straight games and has multiple hits in three straight contests.

- Monmouth finished with five extra base hits in the game, including the home runs from Eric Sabato and James Harmstead.

- Luke Smith got the win in relief for Saint Joseph's as he went three innings and allowed one run on four hits. 
- Caden Carlin took the loss in relief for Monmouth as he surrendered five runs in a third of an inning. 
- Alec Couture started for the Hawks and had three strikeouts in five innings of work.
