PERRY AND STAHL LEAD HAWKS IN LOSS TO MERCER

MACON, Ga. – Dylan Perry had three hits and Phil Stahl drove in three runs as the Monmouth University baseball team fell 6-5 to Mercer University in Friday night's series opener. 
 
Stahl put the Hawks on the board in the top of the first. His sac fly to right scored Eric Sabato with the game's first run. 
 
Mercer took a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run by Antonio Brown in the bottom of the first. 
 
Stahl had a one-out double in the third that tied the game at 2-2. He put the Hawks on top 3-2 in the top of the fifth as his two-out single scored Sabato. 
 
Mercer tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and went ahead 6-3 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. 
 
Three straight singles to open the top of the eighth pulled the Hawks to within two, 6-4. Casey Caufield picked up an RBI as his base knock plated Chris Andrews. After Mercer got the first out of the frame, Austin Denlinger had an RBI groundout that scored Perry and made it a 6-5 game.
 
Monmouth had a pair of runners reach in the top of the ninth but could not bring either one around and Mercer claimed the 6-5 victory.

NOTES
- It was the first ever meeting between the Hawks and Bears.
- Phil Stahl's multi-RBI game was his first of the season.  
- Eric Sabato has now hit in four straight games for the Hawks.
- Dylan Perry had the first multi-hit game of his Monmouth career.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Monmouth registered a season-high 15 hits as the Hawks out hit Mercer, 15-7. 
- The Hawks finished with eight strikeouts while Mercer registered 12. 
- Dante Ciaramella took the loss for Monmouth as he went 1.2 innings in relief and allowed three runs. 
- Reid Fagerstrom earned the win for Mercer as he went two innings and allowed two runs for Mercer. 
- Derek Benzinger continued his scoreless streak to start the season for the Hawks. Benzinger went 1.1 on Friday night without allowing a hit and has now tossed 4.1 scoreless innings for the Hawks. 
 
NEXT UP
Monmouth will be right back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 as the Hawks face Mercer at 12 p.m.
