WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Redshirt freshman
Jaret Valencia earned his second straight CAA Rookie of the Week honor, CAA officials announced Monday morning. Valencia helped MU to a 2-0 week by averaging 15 points and 2.5 blocks on the weekend.
In Thursday's win over Campbell, Valencia blocked four shots and scored 13 points, adding five rebounds in 34 minutes while shooting 5-11 to help Monmouth to a late comeback victory. He followed that with a 7-10 shooting performance against Stony Brook, finishing two points shy of a career best with 17 while contributing two assists and another block.
Valencia is the first Hawk to earn consecutive Rookie of the Week honors since Travis Taylor did so in the NEC in November 2008, and the fifth Hawk to earn CAA weekly honors this season, joining
Xander Rice, who has been Player of the Week twice, and
Abdi Bashir Jr., who was Rookie of the Week on November 27.
Monmouth is back on the court Thursday night to take on Towson on the road, with tip set for 7:00 p.m. on FloSports and on the radio via the Monmouth Digital Network.
