HAWKS TRIPPED UP BY ARMY IN WEEKEND FINALE

CARY, N.C. – Designated hitter Jay Bant had a pair of hits as the Monmouth University baseball team fell to Army West Point, 10-1 on Sunday morning at the USA Baseball Training Complex. 
 
Army took an early lead with a two-run home run from Sam Ruta in the top the third. 
 
The Black Knights extended their lead with five runs in in the top of the fifth. Ruta added a two-run double in that frame. 
 
Army tacked on a run in the seventh and two in the ninth for their 10 runs on the day.
 
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as Casey Caufield drew a two-out bases loaded walk that plated Dylan Perry.

NOTES
- Army now leads the all-time series against the Hawks, 9-7. The two sides will meet one more time this season in West Long Branch on March 27.
- Freshmen Wyatt Hunt, Chris Walsh and Brendan Buecker all made the first plate appearances of their collegiate career in the game.  
- Walsh picked up a hit in his first collegiate at-bat while Buecker walked in his.
- Josh Halcisak and Stefan Swee each tossed an inning of scoreless relief in their collegiate debuts.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Army outhit the Hawks, 8-5 in the game. 
- Jay Bant's multi-hit game was his first of the year. 
- Casey Caufield reached base twice via a walk. 
- Bryce Brownlee started for Army and went 5.2 innings without allowing a run to earn the win. 
- Nick Tamburro started for the Hawks and gave up two runs in four innings while striking out three in the loss.
 
NEXT UP
Monmouth will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 23 when it begins a three-game series at Mercer at 6 p.m.
