HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Liza Suydam scored a goal in each half which helped power the Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win at Hofstra University in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Thursday night.
Hofstra fired off the first shot of the contest just 49 seconds in, but
Cassie Coster turned it away.
The Hawks responded at 7:54 as
Loren Gehret knocked a ball back to Suydam, who drove it home for the 1-0 lead.
Coster came through with two more big stops in the next four minutes to keep Hofstra off the board.
The two teams went back-and-forth over the next 20 plus minutes as Monmouth held its 1-0 edge.
Hofstra struck for the equalizer at 41:24 as the Pride turned a free kick into an Emma Johnson goal.
The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1.
Monmouth brought high intensity to start the second half and converted that into a goal at 49:59.
Emily De Almeida brough the ball up the middle and played a pass into the left side. Gehret crossed that ball to the right side of the box and
Summer Reimet put home a high shot for a 2-1 lead.
Hofstra tied things at 2-2 a little less than 10 minutes later as Mille Davies scored on a penalty kick.
Suydam's second of the day at 63:11 put the Hawks back on top. Reimet crossed a ball in the box to the left side post and Suydam buried it for a 3-2 lead.
The Hawks and Pride continued to battle over the final 20 plus minutes of the contest.
Lauren Bruno did a nice job of getting in the middle of a cross in the box to keep Hofstra off the board late as Monmouth closed out the 3-2 win.

- Monmouth moved into a tie for first place in the CAA standings with Stony Brook. Both teams have 20 points with one match remaining in the regular season.
- The win gave the Hawks their 10th victory of the year. Monmouth has won at least 10 matches in four straight seasons and 17 of the last 18 years (only miss was 2020-21 Covid shortened season).
- Monmouth picked up its second straight win over the Pride and move to 2-4-3 all-time against Hofstra.

Liza Suydam's two-goal performance was her second brace of the season. It gave Suydam seven goals on the season which matches her season total from a year ago.

Summer Reimet's goal was her 10th of the year. It is the first time a Hawk has scored 10 goals in a season since Lauren Karabin had 10 in 2021.

Loren Gehret had a pair of assists in the contest. That raised her season total to five helpers, which is tied for second on the team with Reimet.

Cassie Coster made four saves, her third straight contest with at least four saves. It was the 10th time this season that Coster has made at least four saves in a match.
- Coster's win in goal was her 10th of the season and 34th of her career.
NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Monmouth held a 15-13 edge in shots in the contest. The Hawks put 10 shots on goal to Hofstra's six.
- Hofstra took four of the six corner kicks in the match.
