TOWSON, Md. – A pair of second half tallies powered Towson University to a 2-0 win over the Monmouth University women's soccer team in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams had early chances in this one, tallying two shots apiece in the first 10 minutes of the match. Each goalkeeper made an early save to keep things scoreless.
Cassie Coster made a nice stop for the Hawks in the 23rd minute and the Hawks responded with a solidly struck shot from
Maddison Perna on the other end. However, Towson's Riley Melendez got a hand on Perna's shot to keep it out.
The Hawks and Tigers went into the half tied at 0-0.
Towson broke the scoreless tie at 52:27 with a goal from Malin Bernt Schöps.
The Hawks didn't let up on the pressure as
Summer Reimet had a shot that was saved and
Loren Gehret put a ball in on a corner kick that just clipped the crossbar and stayed out.
Coster made a pair of big stops in the 71st minute that kept the Monmouth deficit at 1-0.
The two teams continued to battle before Towson added a second goal at 76:43 from Courtney Butlion.
Monmouth got off three shots in the final five minutes but was unable to capitalize as Towson closed out the 2-0 win.
NOTES
- Monmouth is now 2-4-1 all-time against Towson. The Tigers have earned back-to-back wins over the Hawks.
- Towson's first goal in this contest snapped a streak of over 330 minutes in which the Hawks had not conceded a goal (second half versus Stony Brook on Oct. 3).

Cassie Coster finished with eight saves for the second straight contest for Monmouth. She now has seven matches with five or more saves this season.

Lauren Bruno led the Hawks with four shots apiece in the game. Reimet put three of her four shots on goal.
