Bastian Hatcher's second half goal and a strong defensive effort pushed the Monmouth University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 12 University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday night.Â

Monmouth extended its current win streak to three straight matches while beating the No. 12 team in the country for the second time this season.Â

The first 15 minutes of the contest was a true battle between the boxes as both teams fought for their opportunities.Â

The Hawks and Quakers continued to fight for every opportunity over the final 30 minutes of the period. Each team had two shots in that stretch, but neither was able to dent the scoreboard. Monmouth and Penn went into the half tied at 0-0.Â

Monmouth brought a renewed energy out of the break firing off three shots in the first 10 plus minutes of the period.Â

As both teams continued to battle, Monmouth was able to break through and capitalize in the 74th minute. The Hawks were awarded a corner kick, and the ball was played into the box by
Patrick Osiecki.
Brendan Tansey flicked the ball from the top of the box into the scrum in front. It hit off
Gabe Dahlin before a final touch from Hatcher scored the goal.Â

The Hawks defense locked down after the goal and withstood a press from Penn to secure the 1-0 win. Penn fired off four shots in the final 12 minutes but the Hawks continued to work.

- Monmouth picked up its second win of the season against the No. 12 team in the United Soccer Coaches poll (Hofstra-9/21 and Penn-10/15). It was the first time in program history that the Hawks have beaten two ranked teams in the same season.Â
