PRINCETON, N.J. – A goal in the final minute of the first half proved to be the difference maker as Princeton University claimed a 1-0 hard-fought victory over the Monmouth University men's soccer team on Tuesday night.Â
Â
The majority of the first half was a battle in the midfield as both teams had chances to push forward but couldn't break through a pair of tough backlines.Â
Â
Princeton used a goal from Ian Nunez at 44:38 to take a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Â
The Hawks came out of the half with a renewed determination and fired off three shots in the first 20 minutes of the half but two went wide and one was saved.Â
Â
Erik Reis rocketed off another shot on goal in the 66th minute but the Princeton keeper was able to get hands on it.Â
Â
Jakob Friedman and Reis fired off a couple of solid shots in the final 10 minutes of the game but once again were stymied by the Princeton keeper.Â
Â
The two sides continued to battle as Princeton closed out a 1-0 win.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"I was proud of the way our guys played tonight against a good Princeton team. We gave up a goal, but we bounced back very well and dominated the game for long periods of time. A few calls didn't go our direction and a couple of missed scoring chances. That's soccer. We are excited to get back on Hesse Field on the Great Lawn this Saturday for our next CAA game."
