WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Liza Suydam's team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 59th minute proved to be the difference maker as the Monmouth University women's soccer team beat Stony Brook 1-0 in a rainy Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) match-up Sunday. The Hawks posted their third straight win and fourth straight shutout.
Both teams had their opportunities in the first half of this one.
Cassie Coster made a big stop in the first 11 minutes of the match while
Summer Reimet had a shot turned away by Nicolette Pasquarella.
The Hawks and Seawolves went into the break knotted at 0-0.
The rain and the intensity picked up to start the second half.
Julia Evernham needed just five seconds to fire off a shot that was saved by Pasquarella.
It was Evernham that started the action that got the Hawks on the board. In the 59th minute Evernham dribbled the ball down the sideline closest to the Hawks' bench and crossed it into the box. Suydam was able to settle it in traffic and power it home for the 1-0 lead.
Monmouth continued to apply the pressure as the Hawks rattled off seven more shots in the final 30 minutes while holding Stony Brook to just one in that stretch. Monmouth claimed the 1-0 victory.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"We are very proud of the way our team came out in the second half. We challenged them to raise their level and gave them a few ideas to create more going forward. They took the information and found ways to create more opportunities in the attacking half. All credit goes to our players for making the adjustments needed and raising their level to find a way to get this result. We are looking forward to Tuesday when we play our third game in six days. It's a tough stretch but thankfully we have a deep and quality roster ready to step up and make an impact!"
