August 14, 2023

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Men's Basketball and Head Coach King Rice have officially announced the signing of freshman guard Abdi Bashir Jr. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Bashir spent time this summer on campus after enrolling and will fill out the Hawks roster this upcoming season.

"We're incredibly excited to add Abdi to our team," said Rice. "He's a great young man from a great family that is excited about this opportunity to represent everyone in his family and community. He can really shoot the ball and we're glad he chose us. He's already gotten on campus and started working with our group which is awesome and we can't wait to continue to work with him."

A shooting guard from Nebraska, he played scholastically at PHHoenix Prep in Arizona. While there, Bashir posted strong numbers throughout his high school career. This past February, he notched 24 points and four assists in a game vs. Prolific Prep, before notching 20 points in a win over SFBA Trinity Prep. One of his most impressive performances came against BCA, where he netted 35 points on nine triples to go with five assists and five rebounds.

Bashir becomes the fifth MU newcomer this offseason, joining three transfers in Xander Rice, Nikita Konstantynovskyi and Gabe Spinelli. He will wrap up a two-man freshman class for the Hawks this season, joining Cornelius Robinson, Jr.

The Blue and White open the season November 6 at George Mason after hosting an open exhibition against Rhode Island College on October 21. Season tickets are on sale now by visiting MonmouthHawks.com/Tickets.
