WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Baseball got strong relief pitching but were edged out by the University of Pennsylvania Wednesday, 6-2.
A wild pitch put Penn up 1-0, but MU answered immediately. With two aboard,
Andrew Schmid hit a laser back to the mound that hit the pitcher's foot and dropped down, allowing one run to score and tie the game. Penn scratched across a pair in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, only for Monmouth to again respond.
Ben Winstead singled leading off and
Nick Czarnecki laced his first career extra base hit into the left field corner, a triple to cut it to a one run game.
After the teams traded zeroes for three straight innings, Penn added a run in the eighth. IN the bottom of the inning, Czarnecki represented the tying run but was called out on interference on a foul ball to left. The Quakers would tack on two more in the ninth and win it, 6-2.
