GREENVILLE, NC – Billie Kerwood threw her first complete game of the season on Saturday versus ECU, but recorded the loss as the Monmouth university softball team was blanked by the Pirates, 1-0, on day two of the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, NC. Earlier in the day, the Hawks were also topped by Maryland, 11-0.

The Pirates scored just once in the bottom of the first, but it was enough to give the Hawks their eleventh loss of the season. Kerwood scattered five hits, an earned run, and two walks over a full six innings. She struck out five ECU hitters on 99 pitches.

In the bottom of the sixth, Francesca Torraca made a clutch diving catch coming in on a ball in shallow left field to keep the deficit at one. Kiley O'Rourke led the charge offensively for Monmouth, going 3-for-3 on the day with three singles. She and Torraca both singled in the top half of the seventh, but ECU was able to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on the basepath to hold on, 1-0.

Abby Warner (1-for-3, 1B, BB) reached base twice against the Pirates and now leads Monmouth with nine hits in 2023.
