BASEBALL WINS HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR AT WILLIAM & MARY

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – Monmouth University Baseball scored 10 times in the third inning in defeating William & Mary in CAA action Saturday, 14-12. Austin Denlinger and Ben Winstead drove in three runs apiece, while Phil Stahl added three hits for MU.

Trailing 6-1, Monmouth mounted its biggest inning of the season, scoring 10 times behind seven hits and an error. Denlinger drove in two with a double before Stahl singled to left to bring in another. An error plated a fourth run before Will Trochiano put the Hawks on top with a two-run double to left center. Denlinger and Stahl came up for a second time in the inning and drove in runs for the second time, with Denlinger notching a sac fly and Stahl going the other way for an RBI single. All told, MU led 11-6 after the big frame.

The teams traded pairs of runs to make it 13-8 Monmouth before the Tribe started to climb back. Three in the eighth cut it to 13-12, but Casey Caufield drove in a run with a ground out in the top of the ninth to give MU some insurance. In the ninth, William & Mary loaded the bases but Brady Mutz made a diving play to catch a popped-up bunt before Ryan Bearse got Nick Lottchea swinging to end the game and secure the MU victory.
