PHILADELPHIA, PA – Monmouth University Baseball scored twice in the ninth to win a high-scoring affair at Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, 9-8.
Casey Caufield and
Mason Wolf homered, and MU scored twice in the ninth to take the lead.
Monmouth jumped out to a 5-0 lead, with
Harry Padden scoring on a wild pitch before Wolf launched a home run to straightaway left to make it 2-0. With two aboard later in the inning, Caufield pulled a three-run shot to right to make it 5-0 Hawks. SJU responded with four in the second and three more in the fifth and sixth to lead 7-5.
MU got even in the seventh at 7-7, with
Austin Denlinger singling home a run before
Phil Stahl's sac fly got things square. In the ninth, Denlinger's infield hit gave MU the lead and Stahll added much needed insurance with an opposite field base hit to make it 9-7.
Tommy Kent allowed a solo home run in the ninth but no more to lock down his first career save.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Good team win today. Helmstetter had one tough inning and kept us in the game, Horvath battled and Tommy was able to get three outs to close it out. Offensively, we got contributions from a bunch of guys. Casey had a big game; nice to see him have that kind of day. Denlinger, Mason and Phil have a knack for finding the barrel and did so again today." – Head Coach
