HAMPTON, VA – Great pitching and timely hitting helped the Monmouth University softball team capture its first two wins of the season on Saturday, beating Hampton, 3-1 and 7-2, in a doubleheader in Hampton, Virginia.

The two wins are the first Colonial Athletic Association wins in program history.

After the Pirates jumped out to 1-0 first-inning lead, Mackenzie Bloss and Eve Serrato immediately responded with back-to-back doubles to tie the day's first game. Riley Riendeau productively grounded out to second, moving Serrato to third before Julia Thuer drove her home with an RBI single to right putting the Hawks up 2-1 after the top half of the second frame.

Sophomore pitcher Billie Kerwood needed only those runs, as she allowed just one run over seven innings of work in the circle, striking out seven Hampton hitters in the process. In the seventh, Serrato launched her first career home run over the fence to the opposite field to extend the Hawks lead. Kerwood would complete the scoreless bottom half, as Monmouth won its first game of the season, 3-1.

In game two, the Hawks got the offense going early again. Bri Lawson drove in her first career run in the first inning on a groundout before Hampton tied the game at one in the bottom half. Julia Thuer gave the Hawks another second-inning lead on yet another RBI single to right field.

In the third, Emily Spencer drove in two on a line drive to center to put the Hawks up 5-1. Abby Warner and Lawson added RBI singles in the fourth to make it a 7-1 ballgame. Kylie Gletow continued the success for Monmouth in the circle. The senior threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out three. Behind her arm, the Hawks were able to take game two, 7-2.
