DELAND, FL – The junior catcher combination of
Devin Coia and
Abby Warner blasted the Hawks' first two home runs of the season, but the Monmouth University softball team fell to Mercer and Fairfield in both of its games on day two of the Stetson Hatter Classic in DeLand, FL.
Â
Coia and Warner highlighted a Hawk offense that totaled five runs and eight hits on the day. In the first game against Mercer, Warner drove in Monmouth's second run of the game – an RBI single scoring
Francesca Torraca (1-for-3, RBI) in the bottom of the third putting the Hawks up 2-1 at the time. Mercer was able to respond with two in their half of the fourth, and they eventually added insurance to take a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Off the bench as a pinch hitter, Coia smoked the first pitch she saw beyond the right center wall, cutting the lead to 10-4.
Bri Lawson immediately followed with her first career extra-base hit, a double, but the Bears would then secure the final couple outs to win by that very score.
Warner followed up with a 2-for-2 game against Fairfield where she sent a 3-1 pitch over the center field wall for her first home run of the young season. Fairfield had an early 4-1 lead prior to Warner's homer and tacked on to win the game 9-1 in five innings.
