HAWKS FALL TO TRIBE IN CAA TITLE GAME

FINAL SCORE
#1 Monmouth 2 (12-6)
#3 William & Mary 3 (11-8)

NEWARK, Del. – The William & Mary Tribe defeated the Monmouth University Field Hockey Team by a final score of 3-2 in overtime to win the CAA Championship on Sunday afternoon at the University of Delaware's Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

In highlight-reel fashion, junior forward Sofia Fouces opened the scoring with her league-leading 18th goal of the season 9:42 into the first quarter. Fouces took a long pass and drove towards the endline before spinning into the box and sending a rocket into the top of the cage while falling down. The unassisted tally marks the 14th different game the Argentina native has scored in, as she also leads the conference in points with 42.

Monmouth held a 1-0 lead at the half despite being outshot, 5-2, but Lauren Curran equalized just 2:07 into the second half one her first of three goals on the afternoon.

Aylin Aufenacker would give the Hawks the lead again nearly nine minutes later on her fourth goal of 2023 and 27th of her career. The forward made a defender miss, gathered her on rebound after an initial contested shot, and potted the second chance home in a period that saw the Hawks outshoot the Tribe, 5-1.

William & Mary would turn up the pressure in the fourth, however. The Tribe threw nine shots towards freshman goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin, who finished the day with 11 saves. On the back of four consecutive corner opportunities, Curran broke through with 4:41 remaining in regulation tying the game at two apiece. The game would head into sudden death overtime locked at that very score.

Each team was able to generate chances in the first overtime frame, and the Hawks successfully made it through a five-minute yellow card for Fouces at the 63:41 mark.

Curran and the Tribe would eventually end the game 4:38 into the second overtime period off William & Mary's 13th penalty corner, clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament and ending the season for Monmouth.

Reese Bloomstead, Aufenacker, and Fouces were named to the CAA All-Tournament Team for their strong showings in the postseason.
