FIELD HOCKEY TOPS FAIRFIELD TO OPEN 2022 SEASON

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team opened its 2022 season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Fairfield on Friday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field.

The Hawks never trailed as graduate student Annick van Lange scored twice off corner opportunities in the first half. Fairfield cut the Monmouth lead in half midway through the second quarter, but was unable to level the score.

Monmouth took advantage of another corner with 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter and put the game away when freshman Rosa Boender scored her first-career goal.

- Annick van Lange increased her career goal total to 53. van Lange is tied for second all-time in career goals with Trish O'Dwyer (2011-14).
- Bente Steenhorst and Aylin Aufenacker each contributed two assists.
- Aufenacker became the seventh Hawk in program history to reach 20 career assists.
- Steenhorst recorded her first-career multi-point game.
- Johanna Karlhuber and Katie Yoder each added assists on Rosa Boender's first-career goal.
- Yoder's assist was the first of her career.
- Phileine Hazen made two saves in goal and earned the win.

The Hawks will play their first road game of the 2022 season when they travel to Storrs, CT to meet #15 UConn on Sunday at noon. The contest will be broadcast live on FloSports.
