JERSEY CITY, NJ – Behind a pair of home runs by
Danielle Dominik and
Abby Warner, the Monmouth University softball team (8-35, 3-11 MAAC) earned a split against Saint Peter's on Sunday, winning game two by a score of 6-4.
Dominik's four-bagger came with two outs in the seventh inning, when the senior launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to break the 4-4 tie and give the Hawks the lead. The home run, which was Dominik's first of the season, allowed
Eve Serrato to come home after the freshman worked a one-out walk earlier in the inning.
Billie Kerwood, who entered in relief in the sixth inning, retired the side on just nine pitches in the home half of the seventh, securing her fourth win of the year in the circle.
Abby Warner also provided a big blast for the Hawks with two outs in the third inning. On a 2-2 pitch, Warner sent a three-run home run out to left center, extending Monmouth's lead to 4-0. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the inning when
Stavi Augur came around to score on a throwing error following a sacrifice bunt by Serrato.
The Peacocks took the opening game of the doubleheader 6-0, with all their runs coming across to score in the fifth inning. Only one of the runs was earned as Kerwood and
Kylie Gletow posted solid performances, combining for eight strikeouts against just one walk over six innings of work.
