WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth Univeristy softball team (5-24, 0-2 MAAC) opened conference play on their home field, dropping a pair of games to Iona (10-13, 2-0 MAAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Gaels built a 4-0 advantage in the opening frame following three home runs and never looked back. The lone hit for the Hawks came in the fourth inning when
Francesca Torraca reached on a single. Torraca stole her team-leading sixth base of the season and advanced to third on a passed ball but was unable to make it home.
Stavi Augur worked a pair of walks while
Lindsey Baron earned one free pass.
Billie Kerwood pitched 5.2 innings of relief, racking up ten strikeouts.
Â
Game two was scoreless through the first six frames, but a home run in the top of the seventh was all the offense Iona needed to take home its second victory of the afternoon.
Kylie Gletow tossed a complete game, scattering four hits while striking out two and walking two. MU totaled ten hits in the game but were ultimately unable to push across a run.
