WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth Univeristy softball team (5-24, 0-2 MAAC) opened conference play on their home field, dropping a pair of games to Iona (10-13, 2-0 MAAC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Gaels built a 4-0 advantage in the opening frame following three home runs and never looked back. The lone hit for the Hawks came in the fourth inning when Francesca Torraca reached on a single. Torraca stole her team-leading sixth base of the season and advanced to third on a passed ball but was unable to make it home. Stavi Augur worked a pair of walks while Lindsey Baron earned one free pass. Billie Kerwood pitched 5.2 innings of relief, racking up ten strikeouts.

Game two was scoreless through the first six frames, but a home run in the top of the seventh was all the offense Iona needed to take home its second victory of the afternoon. Kylie Gletow tossed a complete game, scattering four hits while striking out two and walking two. MU totaled ten hits in the game but were ultimately unable to push across a run.
