POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Powered by home runs from
Stavi Augur and
Abby Warner, the Monmouth University softball team (7-32, 2-8 MAAC) split its doubleheader with Marist on Saturday afternoon, picking up a win in game two by a score of 6-4.
Â
After the teams exchanged zeros for the first five innings, Augur sent a two-out, two-run home run to left center in the top of the sixth, giving Monmouth a 2-0 lead. The Red Foxes quickly countered in their half of the inning, plating four runs with two outs and taking a 4-2 lead into the seventh.
Â
The Hawks battled back, though, as
Emily Spencer got on base to lead off the final frame due to an error by the shortstop.
Abby Warner capitalized on the defensive miscue, connecting on her team-leading fourth home run of the season to even the game up at 4-4. With runners on first and second,
Lindsey Baron singled to centerfield to bring home pinch runner
Lexi Castaneda and give the Hawks a 5-4 advantage.
Kiley O'Rourke provided MU with an insurance run when she scored on a wild pitch.
Billie Kerwood shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, securing her sixth complete game of the season.
Â
Marist's offensive attack in game one was too much to overcome as the Red Foxes took the victory in five innings by a score of 16-0.
