LATE THREE GIVES MU WBB A WIN IN CAA OPENER

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Freshman Amiya Carroll knocked down a three-pointer with 26.4 seconds left on the clock that gave the Monmouth University women's basketball team the lead in a 54-49 win over Northeastern University on Friday afternoon. The Hawks won their first ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contest and snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
 
Ariana Vanderhoop led the Hawks with 17 points and four assists while Bri Tinsley had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Carroll contributed a season-high 11 points and four rebounds to the cause. Derin Erdogan led Northeastern with 18 points and five rebounds. 
 
The Hawks and Huskies went back-and-forth to start the first quarter as the visitors led 9-8 at the 2:40 mark. Baskets from Vanderhoop and Jen Louro gave MU a 12-9 lead after one period of play. After Northeastern hit the first bucket of the second quarter, Monmouth rattled off eight straight points and pushed its lead to 20-11 with 8:28 until the half. Tinsley had five of the eight in that stretch. Vanderhoop knocked down a three-pointer at 3:13 which gave the home team its largest lead of the game, 27-16. Monmouth eventually settled for a 29-21 advantage at the break. 
 
A jumper from Tinsley at 6:28 of the third quarter put MU on top, 34-23. Northeastern cut the home team advantage to five, 34-29 with 3:43 to go in the period. The two teams traded baskets as Monmouth took a 39-34 lead after three periods of play. The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth quarter. Erdogan scored four straight points, which gave the Huskies a 44-41 edge with 5:31 to play. The Hawks and Huskies traded baskets as Vanderhoop's triple tied the game at 47-47 with 2:28 to play. Trailing 49-47, Monmouth scored the final seven points of the game, including Carroll's triple to secure the win.

- Monmouth knocked down eight three-pointers in the game, including three each from Amiya Carroll and Ariana Vanderhoop. The Hawks are now 5-3 on the season when they hit at least eight three-pointers in a game. 
- The Hawks improved to 2-0 in conference openers under head coach Ginny Boggess.
- MU had five blocks in the game and improved to 3-2 on the year when it blocks at least five shots in a game.
- The Hawks had a season-high 12 steals in the contest. It was the most steals by a Monmouth team in a single-game since they had 12 against Iona during the 2020-21 season.
- The Hawks improved to 4-1 at home this season.    

 NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Ariana Vanderhoop scored a team-high 17 points in the game. She has scored in double figures in four of the last six games for the Hawks.
- Bri Tinsley contributed 12 points, her fourth straight game in double figures and eighth of the season. 
- Amiya Carroll's 11 points and four rebounds were both season-highs.
- Belle Kranbuhl led the Hawks in rebounds (7) and steals (4). It was her second straight game with four steals. 
- Monmouth shot 42% from the field in the game. It was the Hawks' best field goal percentage since the Brown game on Nov. 25 (42.9%). The Hawks are 4-2 when shooting better than 40% from the field. 

NEXT UP
Monmouth is back on the court on Sunday, Jan. 1 as it rings in the New Year with a visit to Delaware. That CAA contest is set to get underway at 2 p.m.
