NEWARK, Del. – The Monmouth University field hockey team saw their 2022 season end in the CAA Championship Semifinals at the hands of the Drexel Dragons by a score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Newark, Del.
In their first season as a member of the CAA, the Hawks won the conference's Regular Season Title and entered Friday's game as the top seed in the tournament.
Graduate forward
Annick van Lange scored her nation-leading 24
th goal of the season with 41 seconds remaining in the first half. After being blocked on her first shot attempt, van Lange, the 2022 CAA Offensive Player of the Year, pounced on her own rebound and fired a wicked backhand shot into the far side of the net.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime as goalkeeper
Phileine Hazen made four acrobatic, clutch saves in the first 30 minutes. The true freshman was named to the All-CAA First and All-Rookie teams Thursday, as well as winning the conference's Rookie of the Year Award.
The Dragons were able to come alive offensively in the second half, capturing heavy momentum by scoring the game's equalizer on a corner just 23 seconds into the third quarter. Hazen would stand tall finishing with six total saves, but Drexel converted twice more on corner tries to take a 3-1 lead early in the fourth.
Even by pulling Hazen for an extra attacker with about 10 minutes remaining, the Hawks could not find the back of the net again.
The Dragons held on for the win, advancing to their first CAA Championship Final since 2012. They will play the winner of Delaware and Northeastern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
