WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Lorane Vanneste's second goal of the game came halfway through the first overtime session to send Monmouth University Field Hockey (1-1) past Northeastern University (0-2) on Sunday, 6-5.
Hanna McKie netted three goals for the Blue and White, who came back from two goals down in the fourth to win its first game of the season.
Â
Vanneste capped the wild affair with 4:57 remaining in the first OT period, scoring off a corner from the top of the circle on an insert from
Hannah Schiavo.
Â
Vanneste gave MU a 2-1 lead in the third quarter, but Northeastern tied it with no time remaining in the period on a penalty stroke from Lauren Rowe. That set the stage for a frantic fourth quarter that saw Northeastern's Mak Graves score twice just 53 seconds apart to give the visitors a 4-2 lead. McKie followed that up with her own heroics, putting home her second and third of the contest just 1:21 apart to tie the game. Freshman
Jess Tucker then batted one into the top of the net just 42 seconds after that to make it 5-4 Hawks, capping a stretch of three goals in 2:03. Northeastern's Lara Taylor tied the game with 59 seconds remaining to force overtime. Â
Â
Monmouth registered 10 shots to Northeastern's two in the opening half, finally striking with just over five minutes to play in the second quarter. Freshman
Johanna Karlhuber entered the circle along the end line and fed
Hanna McKie, who turned from straight on and scored her first goal as a Hawk to put the Blue and White in front. Northeastern earned a corner in the closing seconds of the half, and Lauren Rowe's shot was deflected home on the far post by Caroline Sweeney with three seconds to play in the period to knot things at one at the break.

NOTES AND QUOTES
"We've worked tirelessly on the culture and I think we took a massive step forward in our culture. It's absolutely massive to get a win. Our schedule is pretty tough so every game we're about to play is going to continue to get harder. We're looking to get to the position where at the end of September when we see Maine, we're at our best form." – Head Coach
Carli Figlio
Â
"You could see on the pitch that we were fighting until that last whistle blew and we came back with those two goals. We've got a lot of new faces on this team, me being one of them, and one of our keys for this team is 'One Team, One Fight'. We're a team on the pitch and the fact that the offense is coming from the back, to the middle, we have 10 or 11 players on the pitch that can score a goal which is crucial at this point in the season." –
