WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Sophomore
Colleen Craven (Moorestown, NJ/ Moorestown) tied the game on a deflection into the netting midway through the fourth quarter but Stanford's Sarah Johnson scored the game-winning goal with 3:49 left in the second overtime to give No. 20 Stanford a 3-2 win over No. 19 Monmouth, Saturday afternoon in the America East Field Hockey Championship game.
The Hawks, who had their seven-game winning streak snapped, finished the spring season 10-3, while the Cardinal improved to 10-2 and earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
In a highly competitive game throughout, Monmouth found itself in a hole in the fifth minute when Corinne Zanolli scored her first of two goals on the afternoon. Junior
Annick van Lange (Sint-Job, Belgium/ Annuntia Institute) answered back quickly with her seventh goal of the season off of a corner less than a minute later to even things at 1-1.
Zanolli registered a penalty stroke in the eighth minute to give Stanford a 2-1 advantage it would carry into the fourth quarter. Craven's one-handed deflection into the top left netting knotted things up with 7:30 left in regulation and forced the extra periods. Stanford got the better the opportunities in the overtime sessions, outshooting the Hawks 7-1 and earning three attacking corners.
Kate O'Hogan, who registered four of her six saves in overtime, was named to the All-America East Championship Team and was joined by van Lange and
Ireen Frenken.
NOTES & QUOTES
"To say the coaching staff is proud of this team would be the understatement of the year. There is not a press release long enough to explain the dedication, love, heart, camaraderie, teamwork, and family that this group has created. I know I speak for everyone when I say I am beyond thankful to the seniors who have created and left an amazing legacy as well as the underclassmen who through all adversity came together to create one of the most memorable seasons I've had! So thankful and proud of them."
