FINAL SCORE
#3 Monmouth 2 (5-1-2)
#2 Quinnipiac 0 (5-2-1)
HAMDEN, CT – A pair of second half goals sent the Monmouth University women's soccer team past Quinnipiac in a 2-0 win for the Hawks in the MAAC Semifinal on Monday afternoon.
With the win, Monmouth will attempt to win its MAAC-record fifth consecutive championship on Friday when it meets top seed Siena.
Following a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Monmouth increased its offensive pressure on the No. 2 seed Bobcats and broke the stalemate when
Lauren Karabin scored her second goal of the tournament. The junior forward turned the corner on her defender and sent a left-footed shot into the far side netting from the edge of the penalty area.
Quinnipiac nearly leveled the score after a corner kick in the 59
th minute, but Fleur Cordier's shot struck the crossbar and Monmouth cleared the danger. In the closing moments, Karabin found an open
Alexa Correa, who put the game to rest when she sidestepped a defender and scored from 15 yards out.
NOTES & QUOTES
"A terrific performance from start to finish. We noticed some things from a tactical perspective after reviewing the film from our first game against Quinnipiac and we made an adjustment, which allowed us to switch the field more quickly. As a coaching staff we are so proud of the entire team as the reserve group embraced their role and carried us to victory."
