WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University softball team split with Manhattan on Saturday, defeating the Jaspers 1-0 before falling 2-1.
 
Senior pitcher Alyssa Irons (Rock Creek, OH/Jefferson Area/Hofstra) registered a complete-game shutout in the opener, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
 
Senior Tommi Stowers (Columbus, IN/Columbus North/Western Kentucky) hit the eventual game-winning home run in the bottom of the fourth in game one.
 
Sophomore Kylie Gletow (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) pitched all seven innings in game two, giving up just four hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters.
 
Monmouth's record now stands at 8-4 (8-4 MAAC) on the season, and travel to Marist next weekend.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES

-In game one, senior Erika Coreth and Stowers hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first with two outs, but Coreth was thrown out at first.
-After giving up a single in the top of the second, Irons didn't allow a hit for the rest of the game. She retired 17 straight batters.
-In the bottom of the fourth, Stowers launched a solo home run to left center.
 
-In game two, Manhattan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Jaspers hit an RBI double before reaching on an error to score a run.
-Stowers doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks could not bring her home.
-Freshman Julia Thuer led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right field. Senior Deangie Jimenez bumped her to third with a groundout, and she later scored on a double steal with senior Morgan Maziarz, who previously walked.
-Sophomore Riley Riendeau hit a dangerous ball to right field, but Manhattan made a diving catch to end the game.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Irons lowered her ERA to 1.56 on the season with a 6-2 record. She has pitched 54.0 innings with 52 strikeouts.
-Stowers went 3-for-5 on the day total, including a home run, a double, and a run. She leads the team with a .481 average through 12 games.
-Coreth is batting .405 on the season with 10 RBI.
-Gletow pitched her second complete game of the year.

Monmouth will travel to Marist for four games next weekend.
