MEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT IONA IN OVERTIME, 2-1

NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The Monmouth University men's soccer team fell to Iona in overtime on Sunday, 2-1.
 
Junior Liam McGregor (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) scored for the second straight game, giving Monmouth a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Just before the end of the first half, McGregor raced towards the net to tip in a low pass from sophomore Griffin Tomas (Seymour, CT/Seymour).
 
Iona answered with the equalizer in the 76th minute, and eventually sealed the win in overtime.
 
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sean Murray (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) made six saves in the loss.
 
Monmouth drops to 1-1 (1-1 MAAC) on the season, and will return home to face Rider on Thursday.  
 
NOTES AND QUOTES
 
"We played a great match against a very good Iona team. We created some quality goal-scoring chances to go along with possession for long stretches. -Sophomore Ben Zakowski nearly gave Monmouth the lead in the 35th minute, but his shot rang off the post.
-Less than six minutes after being subbed in, McGregor found the back of the net after connecting on a low cross from Tomas, who streaked down the left side.  
-Murray made four saves in the first 30 minutes of the second half to maintain Monmouth's lead.
-The Gaels tied the game in the 76th minute on a header.
-Neither team scored in the final 14 minutes, and the game went to extra time.
-Just over seven minutes into overtime, Iona sent a curving cross into the box and scored on another header.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-McGregor notched the fourth goal of his career, all within the last seven games dating back to 2019.
-Tomas picked up his third career assist.
-Murray has 170 saves in his career, including 11 this season.
-Iona held a 13-9 advantage in shots.
-The Gaels earned three corners to Monmouth's two.
-Zakowski ended with a game-high five shots.
