QUINNIPIAC PULLS AWAY IN FOURTH TO DEFEAT HAWKS

Monmouth Hawks (1-9, 1-5 MAAC) - 54
Quinnipiac Bobcats (8-5, 6-3 MAAC) – 68
 
HAMDEN, CT – A strong fourth quarter that included nine made free throws propelled Quinnipiac past the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Saturday, 68-54.
 
The Hawks led by one point at halftime, but the Bobcats held a 35-20 advantage in the second half.
 
Three-point shooting kept the Blue & White in the game, as Monmouth made 8-of-12 and held Quinnipiac to just 1-of-18.
 
Freshman Jania Hall (Gaithersburg, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) scored a career-high 14 points on the day, shooting 5-of-10 from the floor.
 
Continuing her impressive stretch, freshman Belle Kranbuhl (Boonville, NY/Adirondack Central) added 10 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes.
 
Freshman Gabrielle Wener (Oakland, ME/Messalonskee) filled up the stat sheet in the loss, compiling nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal.
 
Monmouth falls to 1-9 (1-5 MAAC) on the season, and will face Quinnipiac again tomorrow.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES
 
"We exerted a lot of energy overcoming some foul trouble in the first half, then didn't respond well when QU stepped up their pressure in the second. We have to play a complete game to beat a good team." Monmouth head coach Jody Craig
 
-Monmouth made three of its first four shots of the game, taking an early 6-2 lead.
-The Bobcats answered with a 9-2 run, but the Hawks bounced back with a 6-0 run of their own. By the end of the first quarter, the Hawks held a slight 20-19 lead behind nine points from Hall and 9-of-16 (56.3%) shooting as a team.
-Quinnipiac opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run, but Hall and Wener drilled back-to-back triples to get right back in it.
-The Monmouth run eventually got up to 11-0 after a triple from redshirt junior Jen Louro and an and-one from freshman Sakeria Haralson. The Hawks led 34-33 at halftime.
-The Bobcats scored the first eight points of the third quarter to retake the lead.
-Quinnipiac eventually outscored Monmouth 18-11 in the third, making nine shots. Louro made a free throw and a three-pointer to end the frame. Heading into the fourth, the Bobcats held a 51-45 advantage.
-The home team started to pull away in the fourth, hitting six free throws and holding Monmouth to just three points over the first 5:43.
-QU outscored the Hawks 17-9 in the final frame to seal the win.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Hall leads the team with five games in double figures. She also leads the team with 9.8 points per contest.  
-Kranbuhl is now averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the MAAC. Her 2.4 blocks per game ranks second in the MAAC.
-Wener's eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal were all season highs.
-Quinnipiac went 17-26 from the free throw line, while Monmouth went 4-for-11.
-The Bobcats held a 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
-Junior Lucy Thomas scored eight points on 2-3 3FG.
-Louro ended with seven points two made triples.
 
UP NEXT
The teams will play again tomorrow at 2:00 PM. The Bobcats now hold a 32-17 all-time series lead.
